About Us

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), through its *Illicit Crop Monitoring (AFGF98)* project under the Afghanistan Country Programme, conducts the annual Afghanistan Opium Survey. This survey provides national and international stakeholders with critical data on opium cultivation, production, poppy eradication verification, and drug prices in Afghanistan. The primary goal of the AFGF98 project is to deliver reliable and timely information on opium-related activities in Afghanistan. This is achieved through ground-based surveys and satellite imagery analyses. Since 2002, the project has consistently delivered these insights via widely disseminated winter and annual opium survey reports.

The AFGF98 project also serves as a cornerstone for the UNODC Country Office in Afghanistan to conduct technical studies, research, and surveys on underexplored issues related to narcotics, organized crime, drug-related health challenges, and socio-economic factors.

Given the evolving context in Afghanistan, the UNODC Country Office is implementing comprehensive surveys on drug-related issues. These surveys aim to provide an evidence base for stakeholders to design and implement interventions addressing substance use, treatment for drug use disorders, the health impacts of drug use, and broader challenges related to drug cultivation and trafficking.
